Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Invité par son ami Harry Lime, le romancier américain Holly Martins se rend à Vienne, divisée en quatre zones d'occupation. Tout juste arrivé, il apprend que Lime vient de perdre la vie dans un accident de la circulation et qu'on l'enterre ce jour même. L'écrivain n'est pas au bout de ses surprises.
